Britain and America have reached a landmark trade agreement that will maintain no duties on British drug shipments going into the American market.

The Terms of the Deal

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has agreed to boost spending on drugs through the public health system. This move ensures that duties on these crucial products will remain at zero for a timeframe of three years.

This agreement is in response to recent warnings to significantly raise import taxes on branded pharmaceutical products, with figures discussed reaching 100%.

"This deal between the Britain bolsters the worldwide climate for innovative medicines and establishes long-overdue balance to U.S.–U.K. pharmaceutical trade," a release declared.

Trade Importance

Pharmaceuticals constitute one of the UK's biggest exports to the America, which is by far the primary buyer for leading companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Export figures indicate that in the one-year period prior to the third quarter, the UK shipped medicines worth billions to the US. This figure made up 17.4% of total UK exports in that span.

"This guarantee safeguards work, boosts capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to become a global hub for biotech and pharma," a minister remarked.

Key UK Commitments

The pact entails several key pledges from the UK:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will lift the price threshold at which it judges new medicines to be unaffordable by a quarter.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a aim to raise total public funding on medicines from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6% over the next decade.
  • Payback Limit: The sum manufacturers must refund to the NHS to prevent overspending will be capped at 15%. In the past, refunds exceeded 20%.

Industry Background

This agreement comes amid a long-running row between the pharmaceutical industry and the British authorities over drug pricing and approval rates.

These tensions were heightened by assertions that US customers were paying significantly more for the same drugs than consumers in the Britain and the EU.

Over the last 18 months, several major drug company projects in the UK have been delayed or abandoned, while major expansions have been pledged toward projects in the United States.

One official publicly accepted that the NHS must invest a greater share on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a percentage of its overall budget over the previous ten-year period.
