In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
