The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction implies that the team is likely building a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible with a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
