Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a significant honors show nears, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
