Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
