Early Saturday morning, reports emerged of major explosions rocking the Iranian capital, amid statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday. Correspondingly, two plumes of thick smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Context: Escalating Strains and Recent Developments
The incident occurs against a background of sharply increased strains in the region. Key events preceding this attack involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected claims about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation is fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as events unfold.
