A defense minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing classified information in all cars.
Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel
In a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about secret material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
The minister stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that security is a issue in every modern cars.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret level in any kind of car, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Defence Background
The announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
The wider security situation underscores the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in every areas of government operations, from vehicle usage to discussions habits.
